How to Report Illegal Tree Cutting

Recently neighbors reported large trees being cut down at 1809 Defoor Ave, a property previously the subject of an In Rem Review Board vote to demolish the derelict building there. No notice of tree removal or permit was posted, as is required.

Atlanta’s Tree Protection Ordinance heavily penalizes unauthorized tree destruction, and you can report the activity even if it is already finished.

  • For Active Cutting (Call 911): If the cutting is happening right now and no permit is visibly posted on site, call 911 to report illegal activity and request a stop-work order. Quote Section 158-101(a) of the Atlanta tree ordinance to the dispatcher.
  • Gather Evidence: From a safe distance, take clear photos or videos of the site, the remaining tree stumps, the trucks, and explicitly document the license plates or brand names of any tree removal company involved.

Make sure to specify the location!

If unsure, contact ATL311, they’ll help sort it out.

  • For Private Property Trees: If the trees are on private or commercial properties, file a building complaint directly with the Office of Buildings – Arborist Division:
    • Phone: Call 404-330-6874 or 404-865-8487.
    • Email: Send your description and photo evidence to arborist.dpcd@atlantaga.gov.
  • For Public Property/Right-of-Way Trees: If the trees were cut from the sidewalk area, public park, street median, or public right-of-way, contact the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Forestry Division:
    • Phone: Call 404-546-6813.
    • Email: Send details to parkscustomerservice@atlantaga.gov.
  • General City Services Reporting: You can also log the incident through ATL311.
