From Emily Boatright, Chair, Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods (UHNA is a member of BCN)
The Atlanta City Council held a work session on October 15 to review the proposed Zoning 2.0 rewrite, including presentations from Atlanta Planning, Atlanta Housing, and outside consultant Sara Bronin. No legislative action was taken, and no zoning changes were adopted.
[Josh Green published a great article about Sara’s commentary on the rewrite in Urbanize Atlanta]
Council discussion reflected differing perspectives on how Atlanta should accommodate future growth while addressing housing affordability, neighborhood character, infrastructure, environmental protections, and meaningful community input. Several council members questioned how proposed changes would affect established neighborhoods and whether recommendations adequately reflect previous community engagement.
The attached summary highlights the presentations, individual council members’ questions and comments, and major themes raised during public comment.
Following the October 15 work session, the Mayor’s Office expressed that further zoning recommendations would not be developed in a vacuum.
The next Zoning Committee meeting is Monday, October 26, at 10 a.m.

If you haven’t visited the City’s Zoning 2.0 website in a while, we encourage you to take another look. The website provides information on how the zoning rewrite has evolved, including previous drafts, presentations, and community engagement efforts. BCN neighborhood leaders are also encouraged to sign up for updates and share questions or comments as the process moves forward.
